“I am not capable of doing big things, but I want to do everything, even the smallest things, for the greater glory of God.” - St. Dominic Savio
Catechist and parishioner Jake Smith has shared his gifts teaching Faith Formation students from preschool age through high school. Teaching alongside his wife Stacie, they started out alternating yearly teaching their kids’ Faith Formation classes.
Jake’s calling as a catechist began at a men’s weekend retreat 10 years ago while discussing how more fathers should be faith leaders of their families. He states, “I was commenting about how few, if any, male Faith Formation teachers I have seen. As I was saying this…I realized it was silly for me to say this when I didn’t teach Faith Formation myself. I think God was calling me to take action at that time. So, I signed up to help with Faith Formation after that and I have continued since.”
Jake’s favorite memory as a catechist is getting to be a part of the kids’ faith journey and growth. “The questions they ask are incredible. They are so intelligent. Many times, I have to say, ‘Great question.’, ‘I don’t have that answer.’ Or ‘I have the same question.’ I think it is good at times (especially with the older kids) to be open to them about not having all the answers.” At times, he will email Fr. Mike a list of questions from the class, who gives his thoughts.
For dads who want to become more involved in parish life, Jake recommends volunteering for Faith Formation. “You can start out as an aide in the classroom, or a hall monitor if you don’t want to teach. Our kids love it when we get involved in this way. Our Faith Formation staff at SJTW is incredible. They are a joy to work with, so energetic, and willing to do what it takes to make our jobs as catechists easier.”
As St. Dominic Savio said, small changes can make a huge difference in someone’s life. By volunteering as catechist, Jake has been able to help further develop kids’ relationship with God. Even by working as an aide or a hall monitor, you can have a positive impact on their lives.
