BAPTISM

St. Joseph's celebrates the sacrament of baptism for infants at weekend liturgies and the first Sunday of each month at a communal celebration. We embrace the opportunity to share our baptismal call with all.

Parents who wish to have a child baptized at St. Joseph the Worker must be registered as parishioners and attend a Baptism class before Baptism. Parents are encouraged to attend Baptism before the birth of their baby.

To register, call the Parish Office at 763-425-6505 no later than one week prior to the class.

2010 BAPTISM CLASS SCHEDULE

April 12, 2010 June 14, 2010

August 9, 2010 October 11, 2010

December 13, 2010 Classes are from 7-8:30 pm

If you are baptizing a second baby and you have previously attended a Baptism class at St. Joseph the Worker, baptism classes are held on the same evenings from 7-7:45 pm.

The Community of St. Joseph the Worker does not baptize during Lent. Exceptions are made in case of emergency.

Special arrangements can be made for children of school age or adults who wish to be baptized. Please call Ruth Fleming, Director of Faith Formation at (763)425-9801 ext. 230, or email her at ruth@sjtw.net for more information.

CHILDREN’S SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION
For initial sacramental celebrations, students need to attend the parish Faith Formation program or an approved Archdiocesan Catholic school a minimum of one year prior to the year in which they will begin preparation for the sacrament:

This means that those who wish to celebrate the sacrament of Eucharist in 2nd grade, need to attend during 1st grade. Likewise students should attend during 3rd grade, if they wish to celebrate Reconciliation in 4th grade. Teens wishing to begin preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation need to attend during 9th grade. Confirmation is a two year preparation program beginning in 10th grade with celebration of the sacrament at the end of 11th grade year.

Parents are the primary catechists of their children and are asked to partner with the parish in preparing their student for sacraments. Because sacraments are celebrated as a community, it is important that students enter more fully into the life of the parish community during their preparation.

Students who wish to celebrate a sacrament must attend Faith Formation at the parish during the year(s) of their preparation for that sacrament. Students who attend an Archdiocesan approved parochial school may receive Faith Formation through their school. Both Catholic school and parish Faith Formation students prepare for the sacraments together at the parish through a series of meetings, retreats, and use of materials provided by the parish.

EUCHARIST
As Eucharistic people, we celebrate the sacrament of Eucharist every weekend during our liturgies and on most weekdays: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 11:00 am and Fridays at 6:30 am. Eucharist is always offered under both species. Homebound Eucharist Ministers are available to bring Eucharist to your home. Please call the parish office (763) 425-6505 to make arrangements.

In addition to attending an approved Faith Formation program, preparation for First Eucharist consists of a mandatory Parent Session, a Parent-Child Workshop, and completion of sacramental preparation materials.

PARENTS with students preparing for First Eucharist are required to:

1. Attend a Parent Session for sacramental preparation in order to deepen your understanding of the Sacrament and to explore ideas for celebrating Eucharistic themes in the home. THIS IS NOT AN OPTION. Please plan to attend the following session offered at 7:00 p.m.:

Tuesday, January 19, 2010 or Thursday, January 21, 2010

2. Attend a Parent and Child First Eucharist Workshop. THIS IS NOT AN OPTION. This workshop will be offered twice from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.:

Thursday, March 11, 2010 or Thursday, March 18, 2010

Please register for the workshop of your choice on the Sacramental form which you will receive through the Elementary Faith Formation program.

3. Typically, reception of the sacrament occurs in the spring of the year at one of the weekend liturgies. Please register for the liturgy of your choice on the Sacramental form, which you will receive through the Elementary Faith Formation program.

Parents with students who are 3rd grade and older, that have not yet prepared for First Eucharist need to contact Ruth Fleming, Director of Faith Formation (763)425-9801, x230 to arrange for preparation.

RECONCILIATION

The Community of St. Joseph's celebrates the sacrament of Reconciliation regularly throughout the year. Each Saturday at 4:00 p.m. the sacrament is offered on an individual basis.

Students at St. Joseph the Worker typically prepare for and receive the sacrament of Reconciliation during 4th grade. During their Faith Formation classes, each student is given a more in-depth understanding of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and is readied to receive the sacrament individually with a priest in the spring of 4th grade.

In addition to attending an approved Faith Formation program, preparation for First Reconciliation consists of a mandatory Parent Session, a Parent-Child Workshop, and completion of sacramental preparation materials.

PARENTS with students preparing for First Reconciliation are required to:

1. Attend a Parent Session for sacrament preparation in order to deepen understanding of the sacrament and to receive ideas for developing a spirit of forgiveness and healing within family life. THIS IS NOT AN OPTION. These sessions will be offered 7:00 p.m. on:

October 12 or 22, 2009

2. Attend a Parent and Child Reconciliation Workshop. THIS IS NOT AN OPTION. These workshops will be offered 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. on:

CONFIRMATION

St. Joseph's usually celebrates Confirmation late spring of the student’s 11th grade year with the Bishop. Adults seeking Confirmation should contact Ruth Fleming, Director of Faith Formation at (763) 425-9801 ext. 230.

In the sacrament of Confirmation we are affirming our baptismal call to full participation in the life of the Church and the mission of Jesus. We are confirming a commitment to follow the teaching of Christ, of obedience and service to God and to become what God has always intended for us (Eph. 2:10).

We offer a two-year program of sacramental preparation for confirmation beginning in 10th grade. Candidates who are in 11th grade or older are eligible to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation upon completion of all requirements specified by the parish.

Candidates who wish to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation are expected to grow in faith, actively participate in the life and work of the Church and demonstrate the following:

· Make time to pray each day.

· Attend and participate fully in weekly Liturgy.

· Fully participate in the Life Teen Program.

· Experience what it means to serve others by volunteering a minimum of 30 hours confirmed (See Volunteer Hours for details).

· Attend the 10th Grade Confirmation Retreat.

· Participate in a 2nd retreat experience. Most teens prefer TEC as their second required retreat. The Youth Minister must approve retreats outside of the parish.

· Complete the Sponsor/Candidate Program.

· Interview with a member of St. Joseph the Worker's parish community.

· Write a ministry reflection paper describing your ministry service experience.

· Write a letter to the Bishop describing your preparation and readiness for Confirmation.

This year we will celebrate our Confirmation Mass at The Cathedral of St. Paul in St. Paul on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.

Volunteer Hours:

Service is a vital part of Christian living. To follow Christ’s example we must learn how to pour out our very lives for one another. As part of our preparation for Confirmation, we will explore how to be Christ for, and see Christ in, others.

Liturgy Volunteer Hours: (5 Hours, Minimum)

There may not be any better tangible example of our Lord’s sacrifice than in the Mass. In order to draw an understanding of this Mystery it is not enough to merely attend, we are called by the Church into a “full, conscious, and active, participation” in the Mass.

To help our teens realize this goal each candidate will be required to volunteer a minimum of 5 hours in Liturgy or Para-liturgy services. Hours may be accumulated in any of the following ministries: Alter Server, Lector, Hospitality, Projection, Choir, or Liturgy of the Word for Children, Liturgy of the Hours (10th Grade Retreat), or other Para-liturgy services. You must sign up in advance to be a part of these ministries and some training may be required before you begin to accumulate volunteer hours. To sign up, contact Aaron Carpenter or Tarri Nelson in the main office or Barry in the FF Office.

Corporal Works of Mercy: (15 Hours, Minimum)

Another way that we learn to serve Jesus is by serving others. In the Gospel of Matthew (Mt 25:34), Jesus gives us practical (and specific) instruction on how we are to serve others with love and compassion. These Corporal Works of Mercy flow naturally out of our maturing faith and allow us to join in His redemptive Grace.

Most teens find this type of stewardship very rewarding on both a personal (sense of accomplishment) and spiritual level (helping others). Each Confirmation Candidate will be required to volunteer a minimum of 15 hours that ministers to the corporal needs of others. The following list is just a small sample of the ministries that qualify for this type of service: Feed My Starving Children, CROSS Food shelf, Loaves and Fishes, Mary’s Place, Habitat for Humanity, Families Moving Forward, Thanksgiving Baskets, Meals on Wheels, visits to nursing homes, etc.

Note: Student Leaders for the Summer Stretch program or Students participating in a summer Missions program (after their 9th or 10th Grade year) can earn from 13-20 “Corporal” service hours.

Other Volunteer Hours: (10 Hours, Maximum)

To round out the 30 total hours of volunteering we want to recognize our teen’s involvement in a variety of opportunities both within and outside of St. Joseph The Worker that work to build a stronger community. Candidates may accumulate up to 10 hours of volunteer service from any of the ministries listed above or in (approved) programs at school, or with the wider community. Some examples of this type of service are: Retreat Volunteer, Mayhem Lock-in Leader, Faith Formation Aid, Peer to Peer Volunteer, NHS volunteer hours, Cancer awareness events, Humane Society, Salvation Army, etc. You must get approval from the Faith Formation Office before you log volunteer hours from an activity that you would like to perform but is not listed above

Candidates may begin to accumulate volunteer hours for Confirmation during the summer before 10th grade. Students are responsible for maintaining an accurate log and tracking their own volunteer hours.

RCIA -- Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

The process of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is designed for adults who have never been baptized. An adaptation of the Rite is offered for those who were baptized in another faith tradition who would now like to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. This process begins in the fall and continues through the Easter season. The reception of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist is celebrated at the Easter Vigil.

The R.C.I.A. journey here at St. Joseph the Worker begins with a time of personal and faith inquiry. Second, those involved within the journey begin a deeper exploration of their relationship with God, the teachings and practices of the Catholic Church, and God's word among us in Scripture. The third stage begins a time of personal reflection and preparation in anticipation of full reception into the Catholic faith community.

On Holy Saturday, the climax of the candidate's initiation takes place during the Easter Vigil, at which time the Sacraments of Initiation are celebrated. The process continues with an examination of the process and an opportunity to deepen the faith experience. R.C.I.A. is a continuous process that never really ends as far as the parish community is concerned.

For more information or to register, call Ruth Fleming, Director of Faith Formation at 763-425-9801 ext. 230, or email her at ruth@sjtw.net.

* Tour of the Church: More than just a building
* The Role of the Bible in the Catholic Church
* Jesus - A Personal Encounter

O.C.I.C.
(Order of Christian Initiation for Children)
This process is designed for children who have never been baptized, those who were baptized in another faith tradition who would now like to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church, or those children who have not been participating in the sacramental life of the Church. Parents and children will attend sessions together with a coordinator and catechists. In their groups, families will meet God in many different ways - through their catechists, books, songs, liturgies, prayers, Commandments, sacraments, Scripture, videos, art/craft projects, etc. .

MARRIAGE

Because of the serious nature of the life-long decision involved, marriage preparation is very important. As a result, the Archdiocese has set in place a process of marriage preparation. This process includes filing the necessary paperwork, attending a pre-marriage seminar, completing a couple inventory and reviewing the results. This can be a lengthy process; therefore couples should begin this process at least 12 months in advance of their desired wedding date.

Marriage Preparation Information Sessions are typically offered every other month on the 3rd Monday, 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Registration is required; contact the Parish Office at (763)425-6505 to register.

Upcoming sessions are:

July 21, 2008 September 15, 2008
November 17, 2008 January 12, 2009
March 9, 2009 May 11, 2009

The community of St. Joseph the Worker is happy to help you prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage whether you are celebrating your wedding here at St. Joseph or elsewhere. St. Joseph's will also help couples in the process of planning the celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage. Couples will be able to work with our liturgist to prepare for their marriage ceremony.

For those who have been married before or who are concerned their marriage may not be recognized by the Catholic Church, please contact Ruth Fleming, Director of Faith Formation, or Fr. Mike Sullivan, Past
or.
